Reyes, Kahwaji Spark Ancilla to a 2-2 Opening Weekend

     Albertville, AL – After trying to play the past two weekends in Indiana or Illinois, the Ancilla College baseball team found an open diamond in Alabama this weekend and were able to 2-2 over the two days.

     Morton College proved to have more firepower and a good defense as they beat the Chargers 12-3 on Saturday and 17-4 on Sunday.  Ancilla beat Spoon River Community College 17-4 Saturday and 5-4 on Sunday before heading back north.

     In the season opener against Morton, Jack Bennett got the start. He gave up seven runs off seven hits and four walks. He had five strikeouts before Hunter Ferris came in during the fifth.  Anthony Reyes had two hits, including a double and a pair of RBI's for Ancilla. Zach Woods had two hits and a run, while Mason Proulx had a single, an RBI and scored a run in his only at bat.

     Against Spoon River on Saturday, Reyes again led the attack, but he had help. Reyes posted four hits, including a pair of doubles, scored two runs and had five RBI. Sam Kahwaji had two hits with a single and a triple and drove in two runs. Woods scored twice on a hit and base on balls. Hayden Maples drove in two runs with a hit and scored twice himself. Jacob Kalt drove in two runs off his double and Jace Sutherland added a RBI double. Marshal Furner picked up the win allowing two earned runs and collecting eight strikeouts.

     Morton was just as sharp on Sunday as they cruised to a 17-4 win. Proulx had a solo home run and Reyes added two hits for the Chargers. Maples and Furner both had an RBI.  Woods was the loser as Ancilla used three pitchers in the game.

     Kahwaji had a walk-off double to score the winning run in the bottom of the seven against Spoon river on Sunday as the Chargers won their second game of the weekend 5-4. Kahwaji had three hits, two RBI's and a run scored. He also added his second triple of the weekend. Rylan Huntley had two RBI off a double in the bottom of the first inning.  Woods added two hits and scored three runs. Maples was the winning pitcher. He allowed four hits and four runs over six and two-third innings, striking out nine. He also had an RBI.

     Ancilla heads to Chillicothe, OH next weekend to play three games against Clark State Community College.
