Short-Handed Chargers Fall Twice to Lansing

The Marian University Ancilla baseball team is having to work through its share of injuries late in the season, and hosting a very good Lansing team yesterday wasn't helpful. The Chargers dropped two to the Stars, 18-1 and 6-0, but there were some good things mixed in there as well. Below is a look at some highlights from Thursday's action.

Game-1 (L 18-1): The Chargers survived a threatening Stars team in the top of the 1st inning, then proceeded to post the first run of the game themselves. Freshman Cade Riley was able to reach via a 1-out single, then two batters later, fellow Freshman Isaiah Steinhilber drove him in with a single of his own to put the Chargers up 1-0. MUAC would maintain that lead for another inning, but then the Lansing bats woke up.

Lansing compiled 15 walks and 14 hits, but only two extra base hits (two doubles), to patiently score 18 runs over the next four innings, with a 7-spot in the top of the 3rd, and another eight runs to cap it off in the top of the 6th inning. They also got a strong outing from Gavin Walters (7-1), who was able to go all 6.0 innings, allowing just the one earned run, while striking out four.

The Chargers ended up needing to use five pitchers with a somewhat depleted staff. Freshman Jacob Hobbs (4-5) drew the start and last 3.0 innings. He was credited with the loss in the opening game, but he did tally the only strikout in this contest by the MUAC staff.

Game-2 (L 6-0): Marian Ancilla got a more consistent outing from the pitching staff in this matchup, and they had a better outing overall in the field, however, it was tough to score on the Stars' Easton Remick (5-2), who allowed just seven base-runners in his 7.0 innings of action, plus he struck out 12 Charger batters.

Freshman Cade Riley and Sophomore Rudy Ramos managed the only two hits off of Remick, both singles, but it was tough to get anyone into scoring position. Freshman Jaden Franceschina (3-6) started on the mound and pitched 4.0 complete innings, striking out two. Freshman Blaze Schultz and Sophomore Christian Conder pitched the final 3.0 innings without allowing a run.

The Marian Ancilla baseball team is back in action today, as they return the favor by traveling to Lansing to take on the Stars in another double-header. Game times are set for 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time this afternoon/evening. They are then off until next Thursday, when they travel to Kalamazoo Valley. Please come out and support the Chargers, if you are able!!
