Charger Men Open MCCAA Play With 72-59 Win Over SMC

The MU Ancilla jumped into MCCAA play on Saturday at home as they hosted a brand new program to the league, Southwest Michigan College.  The Roadrunners were taking part in their 1st conference game.  While Southwest Michigan came in to the game full of excitement surrounding their first conference game, it was the Chargers who took care of business on the court, leaving with a 72-59 win.  MU Ancilla relied on some stifling defense that held the Roadrunners to 29% shooting (21-71) and 12-42 (28%) from the 3-point line.  The defense was highlighted by allowing only 29 points in the 2nd half.  Southwest Michigan's 59 points represented a season-low in points allowed for the Chargers.

In addition to great defense, the Chargers had some outstanding individual efforts that helped secure the win.  KeAndre Nelson finished the game with 12 points and a season-high 15 rebounds which included 14 defensive rebounds.  Maurice Russell led MU Ancilla with 19 points while adding 10 points and 6 assists.  Jo Coleman and Zach Dutton rounded out the double figure scorers with 16 points and 11 points respectively.

Head Coach Jeremy Herring was very happy to start off MCCAA play with a win at home.  "I am proud of the guys for how they played today on the defensive end for 40 minutes.  We came in to this game with a very specific plan and I think for the majority of the game, we followed it which is great to see.  To hold a college basketball team to 59 points says something about the defensive focus and intensity."

Herring added that he saw positives throughout the roster.  "While we did not shoot the ball great today, we made timely shots and we were able to get four guys into double figures.  If we can continue to get guys healthy and back in the lineup, I think our depth can be a real asset in conference play."

With the win, MU Ancilla moves to 9-4 on the season and 1-0 in MCCAA West play.  The Chargers will return to action on Wednesday, January 18th when they travel to Glen Oaks Community College for a 7:30 tip-off.
