Kevin Cruz Named 1st Team All-Region and All-MCCAA, 3 Other Chargers Honored By MCCAA

The MU Ancilla Charger Men's Soccer Team wrapped up a very successful season at the NJCAA Region Tournament where they fell by a 1-0 score to a very strong Muskegon group.  The Chargers finished at 8-4-2 on the year, a year that included many strong individual performances.  Those strong performances were recognized by both the NJCAA Region XII as well as the MCCAA as four players earned post-season honors.  This group of four was highlighted by Kevin Cruz (SO - Goshen HS).  Cruz was honored as a NJCAA Region XII Division II All-Region player, putting him in a prestigious group of just 9 players to earn this award.  Cruz was also honored as a 1st Team All-MCCAA award winner.  Cruz was a key performer for the Chargers who finished second on the team with 16 points which came on 5 goals and 6 assists.

Head Coach Tyler Born had this to say about Kevin, "Kevin was a great leader for our team, someone we could always rely on.  He played in all 14 games, was our leader in points, and also just such a consistent player for us.  He has such versatility to his game where he can score on his own but also sets up his teammates in ways that they can be successful.  Kevin has been a cornerstone for us the past two years and we will definitely miss him."

In addition to Kevin Cruz, three other Chargers were honored by the MCCAA as Honorable Mention All-MCCAA.  Bryce Taberski (FR - Brandywine HS) led the Chargers both in goals with 10 and in total points with 23 in what turned out to be an amazing freshman season.  Coach Born went in to the season with high expectations for Taberski who turned out to exceed those expectations.  "Bryce is such a dynamic athlete who plays with such a high pace.  He can and did score many times in the blink of an eye.  Bryce's upside is so high and he will be a major force to deal with as his career progresses."

Damien Vargas (SO - Elkhart Memorial HS) earned an Honorable Mention award for a season where he scored 4 goals and also was a key defensive piece for the Charger men.  Vargas scored his 4 goals on just 9 shots, showing the level of efficiency he played with.  Coach Born had this to say about Vargas, "Damien used all the experience that you would expect a Sophomore to use and his game continued to grow throughout the season.  He is one of the top Corner Back players in the league and he was such a consistent and efficient player for us."

Angel Roque (SO - Fishers HS) was the fourth member of the team to earn recognition, also being named to the Honorable Mention All-MCCAA team.  Roque was a key in the midfield as he helped control the ball and used his versatility to play both offensively and defensively.  Coach Born commented on Roque, "Angel is one of those glue-guys who helps a team succeed.  You must have guys with versatility to play on both ends of the field and also have the coaching staff's trust that the right decision will be made.  Angel fills that role every day."

Coach Born concluded his comments on his successful team.  "This was a great team to coach and be around every day.  While we had four guys honored, we had talent and dedication all over the field.  I am proud of this group and while we will greatly miss our Sophomores, I am excited for the future of our program."
