Thursday afternoon, the Marian University Ancilla baseball team headed Northeast to Battle Creek, Michigan, for a 9-inning matchup with Kellogg Community College. The Bruins were able to use some key hits early in the game to get a lead, and they never looked back, winning 9-2 over the Chargers.
Behind a couple of singles, a double, and a triple, Kellogg posted 2 runs in the 2nd inning and another 2 in the 4th inning, taking a 4-0 lead. The Charger bats came to life in the top of the 5th, as Freshman Blaze Schultz and Sophomore Rudy Ramos each singled, before Sophomore James Riddle laid down a sacrifice bunt to move them over. Sophomore Conner Boone then came to the plate and knocked a line drive single to center field, driving in both runners and cutting the lead to 4-2. Boone is now tied for the team lead with 23 RBIs on the season.
However a walk, a single, and an error in the bottom of the 7th allowed Kellogg to add two more runs of their own, and it was 6-2. Then 2 more walks in the bottom of the 8th inning led to a 3-run home run by Aaron Piasecki, who took the 3-1 pitch out to right field, and the Bruins had all they needed to close out the game, 9-2.
Sophomore Nathan Marshman (4-2) took the loss, but the Chargers' top starter still managed to go 6 innings, allowing just 4 earned while striking out 4.
MUAC has today off then returns with a game Saturday at home against Lake Michigan College (MI), followed by a game Sunday at Morton College (IL). Saturday's first pitch is now scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET due to anticipated cold morning temperatures. Please come out and support the Chargers!!
