Chargers Drop Tight One to Cougars

Chargers Drop Tight One to Cougars

Wednesday, the Marian University Ancilla Baseball team traveled to Kalamazoo Valley to play a game originally scheduled for Thursday, in fear of a drastic weather change that might postpone the game otherwise. The Chargers were hunting their first MCCAA victory of the season, and they almost got it, but the Cougars pulled out the win in the bottom of the last inning, 6-5.

Both teams struggled to score, until Kalamazoo Valley was able to find a run in the bottom of the 5th inning. From there, every at-bat mattered. By the end of the 7th inning, the Chargers trailed 3-1, but they stepped up big. In the top of the 8th, Sophomore John Morgan drove a double into right field, scoring Freshman Jose Paris and Sophomore Traevyn Shoaf, tying the contest at 3-3.

However, the Cougars responded, hitting 4 singles and drawing a walk in their first 6 appearances during the bottom of the 8th, as they plated 3 runs and regained control, 6-3. But the Chargers weren't done and would answer in the top of the 9th.

Freshman Wes McNeff led off the final inning with a walk, then he advanced to 2nd base on a 1-out single by Freshman Aiden Marcus. Freshman Nikolas Rios pinch ran for Marcus, and both McNeff and Rios advanced a base on a passed ball by the catcher. Freshman Nolan Pizzo would then single to centerfield, scoring McNeff, and trimming the margin to 6-4. Paris then grounded out to the 1st baseman, but Rios was able to cross the plate, making it 6-5. With 2 outs, however, Marian Ancilla was able to put the ball in play, but a ground out to the pitcher unfortunately ended the night.

Of note, starting pitcher Aiden Diaz, a Redshirt Freshman, pitched 5 strong innings allowing just 1 unearned run, no hits, and he struck out 5 batters. Morgan was the only Charger hitter with multiple hits, a single and a double, plus he stole a base. The Chargers fell to 0-2 in the MCCAA Western Division after this close call.
