Following a disruptive week due to severe weather, the Marian University Ancilla Baseball team returned to action Saturday afternoon in Stevensville, Michigan, at Lakeshore High School. The Chargers played host on a neutral field, to make up for the poor conditions at home, as they fell to Lake Michigan twice, 7-3 and 8-4. Below is a quick summary of each game from Saturday.
GAME-1 (L 7-3): The Chargers led this one 3-1 heading into the top of the 6th inning, before surrendering 5 runs in that frame to the Red Hawks, and ultimately losing, 7-3. Sophomore John Morgan led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a single, then with 2 outs, Freshman Wes McNeff was hit with a pitch. Freshman Aayden Antoine followed with a walk, and Marian Ancilla had a little 2-out rally going with the bases loaded. Freshman Aiden Marcus stepped to the plate and drove a single to right field, scoring both Morgan and McNeff, making it 2-1 Chargers at that time.
In the bottom of the 4th inning, Freshman Caden Taylor reached by way of a 1-out double, before Freshman Kaleb Short singled on a line drive to center, scoring Taylor, and regaining a 3-2 lead through 4 innings. Sophomore starting pitcher Blaze Schultz (0-3) was credited with the loss, but he also struck out 6 batters in just 5 innings of work. Freshman Dylan Ford pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out a pair of batters.
GAME-2 (L 8-4): In the second game of the afternoon, the baseball team this time led 4-0 through 4 innings. However, the Red Hawks found 4 runs in the top of the 5th inning and 4 runs in the top of the 6th inning, to pull out an 8-4 advantage. In the bottom of the 1st inning, John Morgan walked, Freshman Jose Paris walked, and Freshman Logan Clark singled to load the bases. Wes McNeff then sent a hard ground ball into right field, scoring Morgan and Paris for a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Isaiah Steinhilber then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Clark, and it was 3-0 Chargers after 1.
Marian Ancilla would add another run in the bottom of the 3rd inning, as Freshman Nolan Pizzo hit his own sacrifice fly to center, scoring McNeff, who had walked to lead off the inning. That allowed the Chargers to jump out to that 4-0 lead. Freshman starting pitcher Patrick Barry (1-2) took the decision in this one, while Redshirt Freshman Nico Galea came on to throw 2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just 1 hit.
The Chargers are back in action today, again at Lakeshore High School, as they complete a weekend series with the Red Hawks. Games are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. today, about an hour away from MUAC's Plymouth campus. Please come out and support the guys, if you are able!!
