The Spring sports calendar is typically pretty fluid from year to year, as temperatures and rain tend to get in the way of events, so games are moved, postponed, canceled, and even added at a moment's notice. Tuesday was such the case for the Marian University Ancilla Baseball team, as they added a 9-inning contest against the Manchester University JV team. It was a back & forth affair with the score often resembling a football game, but when it was all over the Chargers found themselves on top, 18-13.
Freshman first baseman Wes McNeff stole the show, as he launched two long bombs over a tall right field wall. In the top of the 6th inning, it was a 3-run home run to put MUAC ahead 11-7, then in the top of the 9th it was a solo shot to add their final run, making it 18-13. McNeff added a single and drove in 4 runs in total.
Freshman Aayden Antoine pinch hit in the top of the 6th inning, but he didn't actually finish his at-bat until the 7th due to a runner being caught attempting to steal. In the top of the 7th, however, Antoine buried a home run in the trees in left field to lead off the inning, putting Marian Ancilla up 12-7 at that time. He added a double and was hit by a pitch during his three plate appearances.
Sophomore John Morgan, plus Freshmen Caden Taylor and Jaxson Hixson, all drove in a pair of runs for the Chargers. Morgan had two hits, including a double and a single. Sophomore Jacob Hobbs (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in relief, while Freshman Dylan Ford and Redshirt Freshman Aiden Diaz combined to strike out 5 batters over the final 3 innings, allowing just 1 earned run during that stretch.
The Chargers are next in action this Thursday when they travel to Glen Oaks Community College in Centreville, Michigan. The games are slated to start at 2:00 p.m., so please come out and support the baseball team, if you are able!!
