Last season, the Marian University Ancilla Men's Basketball team found themselves on the losing end of a pair of matchups with a very good Southwestern Michigan Roadrunner squad. But Saturday afternoon, they were determined not to experience the same fate, as they used a strong defensive effort on the way to a 65-49 victory.
Missed shots and stifling defense affected both teams in the first half, as they entered the locker rooms at halftime with the Chargers ahead by a low-scoring, 26-22 margin. Marian Ancilla exited the locker room with a great deal of energy, and over the first 12 1/2 minutes of the second half, they built a 46-32 lead, outscoring SMC 20-10 over that stretch.
The Roadrunners battled back, making shots and getting key stops late, and they even had the ball a couple of times trailing by just 6 points. However, with 2:07 remaining, 6-5 Sophomore forward Jayden Sanders buried a 3-pointer to put the Chargers up by double-figures for good at 57-46, and MUAC finished the game on an 11-3 run.
Sanders was a key for Marian Ancilla, posting a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow Sophomores Dante Porch (14 points, 7 rebounds) and Sean Kimble (8 points, 12 rebounds) also gave good minutes and hit the boards hard, while Freshman guard Jordan Woods (18 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals) put together one of his typical all-around games.
The Chargers return to action with two more MCCAA games this coming week. Wednesday, they travel to Glen Oaks Community College for a Women's/Men's double-header with the Vikings. The Men's tip-time is at approximately 7:30 p.m. Then, Saturday, they return home to Charger Arena for another Women's/Men's double-header with the Lansing Stars. That Men's game should tip at around 3:00 p.m. Saturday. Please come out and support the Chargers, if you are able!!
