Chargers Survive Road Test, Qualify for Postseason

It came down to this...one game, on the road, at Lake Michigan College, and a win puts the team in the postseason. For the Marian Ancilla Men's Soccer team, things got a little dicey early, but the Chargers responded for a 3-1 win, earning a spot in next weekend's Region 12 Postseason Tournament.

The game began with some back and forth, before the Red Hawks found the goal first, taking a 1-0 lead roughly 16 minutes into the contest. "With the chance to secure a spot in the tournament, we came out and got out-worked in the first half, but we were able to go into the half tied, 1-1," commented Charger Head Coach Kirk Weiss. That tying goal would come in the 39th minute, when Freshman Bawi Za Sang scored his team-leading 11th goal of the year on an assist by Freshman Daniel Akinyose.

After refocusing at the half, the Chargers came out on the offensive, scoring a pair of goals in the first six minutes. It began with Freshman Bawi Za Sang continuing his impressive Freshman campaign with yet another goal in the 50th minute, followed by fellow Freshman Matt Polk Jr. finding the back of the net just 58 seconds later, making it 3-1 Chargers.

The score would remain there through the remaining 39 minutes, as a nervous energy turned to celebration at the end. "We didn't make any Xs-and-Os changes at the half; we simply made a mindset change. In the first six minutes of the second half, we were able take a 3-1 lead, where it remained until the end. I am so proud of our guys for coming together at the end of the regular season, winning seven in a row, and going undefeated in October. Now, our focus turns to playing #1 seed Schoolcraft next Saturday," stated an enthusiastic Weiss.

The Marian Ancilla Men's Soccer team now spends a week preparing for a rematch with Schoolcraft. That matchup will take place next Saturday, November 2nd, at St. Clair County Community College. The kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Morton Park in Marysville, Michigan. Please come out and support the Chargers, if you are able!!
