The long trip to Sandusky, Ohio, was well worth it for the Marian University Ancilla softball team, as they eraned their first win of the season with a 22-21 offensive explosion over Terra State. It was filled with a number of big plays, and a lot of offense, but the Chargers were able to take game-1 in the end. Game-2 went the way of the Titans, as Terra State bounced back and got the 12-2 victory in just 5 innings. Below is a quick look at some highlights from yesterday's competition.
Game-1 (W 22-21): In this high-scoring affair, seven of the Charger batters had multiple hits, and the other two had multiple walks, so everyone reached base at least a couple of times and were responsible for crossing the plate at one point or another. Freshman Keely Qualkenbush mashed 2 doubles and 2 triples for 4 total hits, and she drove in 6 runs. Freshman Samantha Perry hit 2 singles and a triple of her own, and she drove in 4 runs. Freshman Abigail Heaston hit a pair of doubles, plus she stole 3 of the team's 9 bases on the afternoon. Freshman Alyssa Mulbarger had 3 hits and a pair of RBIs, but she also hit an inside-the-park home run, one of the most exciting plays in the game. Freshman Samantha Hoffman (1-4) picked up her first win of the season, pitching all 7 innings, striking out 4 batters.
Game-2 (L 12-2, 5 innings): The evening matchup wasn't as kind to the Chargers, but there were still some standout plays put forth. Abigail Heaston was again solid at the plate, picking up 2 more hits, plus she added 2 more stolen bases, giving her 5 on the day! Freshman Kylee Heard had the only extra base hit of the game for MUAC, a triple, plus she drove in 1 of the 2 runs. Freshman Abby Witt also drove in a run on a single, plating Freshman Justice Billingsley, who also stole a base. Heaston (0-4) opened the game in the pitching circle and was credited with the loss.
The Chargers have postponed their three weekend double-headers (4/4, 4/5, and 4/6) due to too many injuries and health-related issues. Hopefully after a nice long weekend of rest, they will be able to get back on the field next weekend and resume their season.
