As the season winds down for the Marian University Ancilla softball team, they spent Thursday afternoon hosting the Jackson Jets. While the Chargers made several nice plays, they still fell twice, 9-1 and 15-2. Below is a look at some highlights from yesterday's action.
Game-1 (L 9-1): The first game of the day saw the Jets jump out to an 8-0 lead, however, after they batted in the top of the 3rd inning, there was an hour delay due to lightning that turned into a brief storm shower. Once the game resumed, the Chargers seemed energized.
Freshman Abigail Heaston hit the first pitch she saw into right center field, reaching second base for a double. One out later, Freshman Samantha Hoffman singled to left field, scoring Heaston, and cutting the lead to 8-1. The Chargers put the ball into play two more times, but each turned into a fielder's choice out.
Hoffman pitched all 5.0 innings for the Chargers, and she continues to lead the team in most statistical pitching categories.
Game-2 (L 15-2): In the second game of the double-header, the Jets posted 5 runs in each of the first two innings to take a 10-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Freshman Samantha Perry led off with a single. With two outs, Abigail Heaston singled, then Freshman Abby Witt singled, scoring both base-runners, and it was 10-2.
The Jets found some power in Game-2, as Ashley Sturgill hit two home runs and teammate Addison Bobbio hit one. Freshman Justice Billingsley (0-8) pitched all 5.0 innings for the Chargers, and she struck out two batters along the way.
The Charger softball team concludes their season tomorrow, Saturday (5/4), as they host Lake Michigan College. The start times for those games are set for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. ET. Please come out and support the Chargers!!
