Turnovers Doom Women's Basketball at Clark State

The Charger women's basketball team opened their season on Wednesday, falling at Clark State College in Springfield, Ohio, 69-59. The Chargers struggled through 26 turnovers to Clark State's 19, but it was an 18-3 steal differential in favor of the Eagles that was the most noticeable difference.

The first quarter started with a lot of back & forth, and the Eagles led 16-13 after one period. Early in the second quarter, however, the Eagles had a quick stretch where they scored multiple baskets in transition, including a pair of 3-pointers, which put the Chargers in an 18-point deficit at one time.

The third quarter brought a little more back & forth, but MUAC was staring at a 17-point hill to climb entering the final stanza. The Chargers found a little momentum at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and they cut the lead to 13 with 7:40 remaining, plus they had already reached the bonus due to an aggressive Eagle defense. While they weren't able to complete the climb, the Chargers did outscore the Eagles 16-9 in the fourth and were able to cut the lead to eight, before the final margin stood at 10 points.

Freshman wing De'Mour Watson led the Chargers with a double-double. She scored 19 points and collected 10 rebounds, while handing out three assists, picking off three steals, and blocking four shots. Freshman guard Brooklynn Cooper was big off the bench, scoring 10 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Sophomore post Derriauna Woodson also scored in double figures with 10 points. Clark State Sophomore post Camille Fultz led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points, while Sophomore wing Kayla Reeves was their top rebounder with 8 caroms. Freshmen Morgan Board (12 points) and Briawna Randal (11 points) also scored in double figures for the Eagles.

The Charger women's basketball team is back in action this Saturday at home, when they take on Lake Land College. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET at Charger Arena. Please come out and support your Chargers!!
