Chargers Win Fifth in Six Tries

The Marian University Ancilla women's basketball team took to the road Saturday evening, facing off against Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. In a night that saw an offensive outburst by the Chargers, 14 ladies in navy & gold played, and 11 found their way into the scoring column, leading the Chargers to an 84-53 victory.

The game started a little slowly, as MUAC adjusted to the Cardinals' half-court zone, and the Chargers led by just a 13-11 margin after one quarter. But in the second quarter, they found their rhythm, posting 31 points in the quarter to lead 44-25 at the break. Freshman wing De'Mour Watson was a huge part of the second quarter boost, as she had an outstanding 27 points by halftime.

The third quarter saw a little back & forth and resembled the opening stanza, but the Chargers still won the quarter, 16-12, extending their lead to 60-37. By the time the dust settled, they had controlled the fourth quarter and were able to see a number of ladies play several minutes each.

Watson led the Cougars with 34 points, in addition to 15 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and a pair of blocked shots. Freshman wing Bella Mahan was the only other player in double digits for MUAC, knocking down 4-7 shots from long range, leading to her 12 points. Freshman post Millie Scorsone (7 points, 5 rebounds), Sophomore post Audrey Schmidt (6 points, 4 rebounds), and Freshman post Beauti Santiago (5 points, 2 rebounds) all rotated through the pivot as reserves, combining for 18 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

Andrews actually placed four players in double figures, with Delina Overfield leading the way with 14 points. Danielle Nau and Lindsey Everett added 11 points apiece, while Emily Hicks chipped in 10 points.

Head Coach Ryan Gould was pleased with the offensive output, though a little concerned with the defensive effort. "It's fun to score a lot of points and see so many people involved offensively. However, we had a number of breakdowns defensively that we must improve upon before we get to conference player in mid-January. All in all, I felt like it was a positive road trip, and any win on the road is a good win."

The Chargers are back in action this Tuesday, as they head to Dearborn, Michigan, for a rematch with Henry Ford College. The Chargers won the first matchup on November 11th, 73-53. This is the first of four consecutive road games. The ladies are at home next on December 19th, when they host Clark State College. Please come out and support the Chargers!!
