The Marian Ancilla Wrestling team opened their season Saturday morning at the Ben McMullen Open, hosted by Muskegon Community College. While the Chargers only have four wrestlers this season, they are not capable of producing a team score, but three of their four guys participated and performed well.
Lone Sophomore Dennis Weston represented Marian Ancilla at the NJCAA National Championships last season, and Saturday he was again strong, finishing in 5th Place in the heavyweight division.
Freshmen Sonny Gilbert and Dyson Adkins each saw their first action as collegiate wrestlers and learned from the experience. "My plans didn't go the way I wanted but it gives me a good look at the competition ahead," expressed Gilbert. Adkins echoed similar sentiments following his performance, "wrestling guys significantly heavier, I feel my second match could have gone either way. I just need to get back into practice and work on smarter wrestling." Freshman Kenneth Grant was unavailable due to injury.
New Charger Head Coach Michael Jackson was upbeat following Saturday's action, "overall, I'm proud of our guys for competing with integrity and situational awareness. We now have a better understanding as a team on how and what areas we need to improve. I'm excited for the future of this program."
The Marian Ancilla Wrestlers will hit the mat again on Saturday, November 9th, when they head to Trine University for the Trine Open. The action begins at 9:30 a.m., so please come out and support these young men, if you are able!!
