Norwood Leads Three Chargers Named To The All-MCCAA Team

After a very successful second half of the season which included a 5 match winning streak and a thrilling 5-set win on Sophomore night to end the season, Coach Shaun McAllister was hoping to see members of her team earn recognition from the MCCAA league voting.  As it turned out, the MCCAA coaches saw plenty of talent on the Charger squad which resulted in three players earning All-MCCAA recognition.  McAllister was very pleased with the recognition.  "To have 3 players recognized by the MCCAA is very rewarding for our coaching staff and the players in our program.  We have made a lot of significant improvements this year individually and as a team.  I am very excited for Ella, Leah, and Julia who deserve the recognition for their hard work!"

Ella Norwood (FR - Concord HS) earned 2nd Team All-MCCAA after a fantastic freshman season in the middle for the Chargers.  Ella brought a high volleyball IQ to the team and the skill level to contribute in many ways.  Ella controlled the middle as a hitter as well as a blocker, turning in to a force during the Chargers' five-match winning streak and carried that over through the rest of the season.  Coach McAllister was very pleased with Ella's freshman season.  "Coming in as a freshman and being our toughest all-around defender says a lot about the player Ella is.  She might not have expected to play all the way around her first year but she proved that she could handle the job and thrive.  Ella has a bright future as a player as she continues to grow her game and we look forward to a great sophomore year from her."

Julia Andreassa (FR - Madison-Grant HS) earned an Honorable Mention All-MCCAA award from the conference coaches.  Julia was recognized for her athleticism on the outside and her ability to put the ball away as a hitter.  Coach McAllister was not surprised at the talent level as a hitter but it was Andreassa's all-around game that turned heads this season.  "Julia came in as a powerhouse hitter for our team this year and she grew so much in her consistency throughout the year, playing her best volleyball at the end of the season.  Her ball control both offensively and defensively definitely set her apart.  She is another freshman who has a bright future and we are looking for big things from her in her sophomore year."

Leah Thompson (SO - Rock Creek HS) was the third Charger to earn honors as she was named Honorable Mention All-MCCAA as well.  Thompson proved to be indispensable due to her versatility on the court where she spent time as a setter and also as an outside hitter who could also play very strong defense in the back row.  She filled many different roles throughout the year and found a way to stand out in each circumstance.  Coach McAllister praised her versatility and competitiveness.  "Leah was a two-year player who helped us get from where we were as a program last year up to where we finished this year.  That progress would probably not have happened without her all-around game.  Leah being able to play as both a setter and a hitter will lead her on to play at the 4-year level where I am sure she will be a big contributor.  I am so proud to have had the chance to coach her over the past two years."
