Chargers Find Success in South Holland

Saturday afternoon, the Marian University Ancilla Volleyball team traveled to South Suburban College to participate in the Katie Crandol "Stand Up to Cancer" Tournament. The Chargers split their pair of contests, falling first to host South Suburban 3-0, but then bouncing back a short time later to defeat Elgin Community College 3-1. Kankakee Community College was supposed to be the first opponent of the day but had to withdraw last week, leaving South Suburban to fill in for them.

Marian Ancilla vs. South Suburban (L 14-25, 22-25, 23-25): This marks the second time this season the Chargers have seen South Suburban, playing them to a 3-1 loss the first time around, but also being very competitive in that contest as well. Redshirt Freshman Kylee Saylor (.250) led the team in hitting, while Freshman Layla Colcord posted 11 assists in the match. Sophomore Brooke Schroeder and Freshman Avery Chopps each took on 16 serve-receive attempts while only committing a single error individually.

Per Chargers Head Coach Heaven Donovan, "we came out a little sloppy in the first set, committing some silly errors. However, in the second and third sets we picked up our tempo, played with a greater competitive fire, and nearly pulled out each set."

Marian Ancilla vs. Elgin (W 25-17, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23): For the second time this year, the Chargers defeated the Spartans, again by a 3-1 margin. They came out with an immediate confidence, having already beaten Elgin earlier in the year, and in three sets made sure to take and hold the lead throughout the set. Freshman Kaitlynn Kelderhouse was the top hitter (.292) this match, as well as the assist leader (11), plus she tallied 4 aces in 23 service attempts. Freshman Torie Davis was also strong hitting it (.286), and she scored 5 aces in 21 service attempts. Sophomore Brooke Schroeder again led defensively, taking on 11 serve-receive chances without an error.

"I was proud of the effort and fire the ladies showed from the opening serve. They looked confident, aggressive, and with the exception of the second set, went out to take a victory from their opponent. I thought they showed growth throughout the day," stated a complimentary Heaven Donovan.

The Volleyball team continues their stretch of five matches in six days, as they return to the LifePlex in Plymouth, Indiana, for home matches Monday (10/14) versus Grace College's Junior Varsity squad, Tuesday (10/15) versus Glen Oaks, and Thursday (10/17) versus Lake Michigan. Monday & Thursday are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., with Tuesday slated for a 7:00 p.m. start. Please come out and support the Chargers!!
