Defense Speaks Loudly in 95-26 Win

As final exams approach, the Marian Ancilla Women's Basketball team is finishing the semester with a pair of home games against Detroit-based teams. Saturday afternoon, they hosted Community Christian College. It was a pretty on-sided game throughout, with the Chargers using a strong defensive effort to win, 95-26.

As the game started, the opening lineup jumped out to a 14-0 lead. But the Lions fought back and closed the quarter on an 11-7 run, making it 21-11 after one period. The second quarter was very similar, with an early push by the Chargers, followed by some quick points from the Lions, but by halftime the lead had grown to 48-19.

In the second half, the Marian Ancilla defensive effort was even better, as they limited Community Christian to just 7 points in the entire half, all in the third quarter. What's more impressive is, they did so without applying full-court pressure at all and just playing sound half-court man-to-man. They forced the Lions into a 7-56 shooting effort, while all 12 Chargers played 10 or more minutes each.

Sophomore wing De'Mour Watson played 16 minutes in her third game back from a January injury, and she led the Chargers with 17 points on an impressive 8-11 shooting. She added 5 rebounds and 3 assists to her stat line, as she continues to ramp back up to 100%. There were additional great efforts by all involved.

Sophomore Maykayla Washington-Cobb nearly posted a double-double off the bench, with 11 points and 9 rebounds in just 13 minutes. Freshman Aaliyah Keil contributed 12 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals, while fellow Freshman Santana Eubanks added 11 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore Nasiya Gause was a fifth Charger in double figures with 13 points on the afternoon.

"Those types of games are always tough to play. I was proud of our focus, and especially with how much it improved as the game went on," complimented Head Coach Ryan Gould. "We have one more opportunity to play before we shut it down for finals, so we would like to continue our improvements from the last couple of weeks."

The Women's Basketball team is back in action on Wednesday, December 4th, when they host Henry Ford College. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start at the LifePlex, and it's part of a double-header with the Men's team. Please come out and support the Chargers, if you are able!!
