Saturday afternoon, the Marian University Ancilla Women's Basketball team was looking to get back on the winning path after falling to Lansing last Saturday by a single point, then having to wait all week as their Wednesday game with Grand Rapids was postponed due to weather. Next up on the slate were the Cougars of Kalamazoo Valley. The Chargers went in yesterday and controlled much of the game from the tip, then traveled back to Plymouth with a 64-51 victory in their pockets.

The game started a bit slowly, as both teams struggled to find the basket. But Freshman forward Santana Eubanks was able to find a few shots at the rim, and the Chargers led 10-3 after one period. The second quarter wound up being a bit more exciting offensively, as Marian Ancilla scored 25 points in the stanza, leading by a 35-16 margin at intermission. Eubanks stayed active and got help from Sophomores Nasiya GauseDe'Mour Watson, and Beauti Santiago over that second 10 minutes.

For the second game in a row, however, the Chargers exited the locker room and had a tough go of it offensively in the third quarter, managing just 10 points. At one time, they led 45-25, but the Cougars put together a nice 10-0 run to narrow that to 45-35 by the quarter's end.

The final period ended up seeing both teams trade baskets, for the most part, with Kalamazoo Valley cutting it to no closer than 8 points at any time, and the Chargers unable to extend their lead again beyond 15 points. At the final buzzer, Marian Ancilla was ahead, 64-51.

Eubanks was again a standout with 20 points and 10 rebounds, posting her seventh double-double of the season and her third in a row. Watson (14 points) and Freshman Annika Davis (12 points) joined Eubanks in double-figure scoring, while Freshman Ciara Bonner made a couple of big 3-pointers and Sophomore Maykayla Washington-Cobb pulled down 3 big rebounds in limited minutes.

The Chargers are now 16-2 (3-1 in the MCCAA) on the season but have a big week ahead of them. Monday, they will host Grand Rapids in a makeup from last Wednesday's postponement. Then, this coming Wednesday they will host Lake Michigan at the LifePlex, and Saturday they will travel to Kellogg for their final installment of the first round of MCCAA conference play this season. Both home games (Monday & Wednesday) will begin at 5:30 p.m., so please come out and support the Chargers, if you are able!!
