Saturday morning, the Marian University Ancilla Women's Basketball team traveled to Battle Creek, Michigan, to take on Kellogg Community College. This marked the seventh and final opponent for the first half of MCCAA play, as the Chargers will play each of the seven teams in the Western Division twice. Kellogg proved to be a tough "out" early on, but the Chargers managed to pull away in the fourth quarter for a 61-50 victory, moving to 19-2 overall on the season and 6-1 (2nd Place) in the MCCAA Western Division.
Additionally, Marian Ancilla welcomed back Freshman guard Aaliyah Keil, who had missed four of the previous five games due to injury. The Chargers seemed to be in control for much of the first half, though offense was a struggle at times against Kellogg's zone. They led be as much as 30 to 20 midway through the second period, but went a little dry as Kellogg trimmed that lead to 30-24 by the intermission.
The second half was much of the same, with the Chargers grinding out possessions, though they did win each quarter of the game. In the fourth period, they were able to extend their lead to 15 points, forcing a Kellogg timeout, but it was too much too late, and they secured the victory with a couple of key stops, ultimately winning, 61-50.
Freshman guard Annika Davis managed to reach 20 points once again, including a perfect 6-6 performance from the charity stripe. She added 6 rebounds to her effort as well. Keil (11 points) and Sophomore wing De'Mour Watson (10 points) joined Davis in double figures. Both also snagged 6 rebounds of their own, plus Keil was able to provide a defensive boost against one of the league's best scorers.
The Chargers don't get much of a break as they return to action Wednesday. With just eight games remaining on their schedule, every win is valuable in the hunt for postseason play. Wednesday will be especially tough, as they head to Southwestern Michigan...a team they only beat by a single point the first time around. Tip time in Dowagiac is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., if you are able to make it out and support the ladies!!
