An annual tradition at most 2-year colleges, Saturday the Marian University Ancilla Women's Basketball team celebrated Sophomore Day to honor and thank those players who will be moving on following the school year. But before the ceremonies began, the Chargers had some business to take care of as they hosted Glen Oaks for the second of two games against the Vikings this season. While it was a bit of a bumpy ride early, the Chargers managed to outscore the Vikings in the second half by a 49-30 margin on the way to the 75-44 victory.
The win moves Marian Ancilla to 22-2 overall on the season with an 8-1 mark in the MCCAA. The Chargers were able to play all 12 players in uniform against Glen Oaks, and they got contributions from throughout their roster.
Sophomore De'Mour Watson led the way statistically for MUAC, scoring 18 points on 6-10 shooting, she collected 14 rebounds for the second consecutive game, and she handed out 3 assists. Freshmen Annika Davis (13 points) and Santana Eubanks (11 points) joined Watson in double-figure scoring, while Sophomore Bella Mahan buried three 3-pointers for 9 points.
Here is Head Coach Ryan Gould on his team's performance, "this is always a tough day because of the emotions surrounding it. For us to be able to go out, overcome a rough start, then lock in during the second half really shows how good we can be. With five games remaining, we will likely need to win them all in order to win our division, so we can't take any for granted." As for his thoughts on the Sophomores, "this is a pretty special group to me. The ladies who are in their second year at MUAC, they were part of my second recruiting class, but the first group I had the opportunity to spend an entire year or so recruiting them, getting to know them, and getting to know their families. All of them, including Maykayla who transferred in this year, will be missed because they are great kids in addition to being true student-athletes."
The Chargers have a couple of days to prepare for their game Wednesday at Lansing Community College. The Stars are currently leading the MCCAA Western Division with a 9-0 record, and they handed Marian Ancilla their lone conference loss by a single point just a couple of weeks back. Tip time for Wednesday's matchup in Lansing will be 5:30 p.m. Please come out and support the ladies, if you are able!!
